What are you doing this year? Or at the very least this week?
Part of the mission of this blog is to be able to share what we are doing in our classes with each other.
So please take a moment and share one goal that you might have for your students for the year or at the very least what you are doing this week in one of your classes.
This year in 8th grade physical science I am once again trying to focus on students gathering data, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions from data. I want them to be able to read a graph as well as set up a graph properly. Be able to identify the independent and dependent variables (putting each on the proper axis).
We are also, going to be working with data and the equations that manipulate the data. General statistics and motion equations.
Finally, I will be taking them back on a tour of Earth science and Life science in preparation for the Oaks test. I am going to focus on reading diagrams and the scientific method.
This week in science we are doing an Engineering activity that focuses on learning to code for computers. Java script.
For this week and carrying into the next my students will be looking covering the topic of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. The first couple days are learning content and understanding the concepts that align accordingly. Next we transition into the more challenging yet worthwhile pursuit of applying that knowledge to struggle with more challenging concepts: What damaging effects does substance use have on the holistic health of a person (physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual)? How does substance use and abuse effect us societal level? Bottom line, why really does a person choose to start using these harmful substances? ( multiple psycho-social factors) How do you make good choices in the future to protect yourself and the ones you love from the influence of substance use and abuse?
